The Jan/Feb Juxtapoz (issue #54) has an ad from M Modern for Shag's "A Gracious Oasis" upcoming solo show in late January '05.

GREAT looking original - if my scanner wasn't floating from Japan to Colorado, i'd post a picture.

Been rocking out to two "classic" Christmas LPs this AM - The Border Brass' "Tijuana Christmas" and "The Boone Family Christmas Album."

"Honey, I guess you better get them some figgy pudding!"

-----

Copro/Nason has sent out info about their upcoming "Krampus & Christmas" group show -

Hey Everyone- The Krampus show is finally here!! Saturday December 11th from 700 p.m. - 11:30. There are some great holiday Krampus paintings so far and more coming!! Monte Beachamp (Beauchamp) from Blab magazine will be here signing his Krampus "Devil in Design" book (scroll past Dave Cooper's "Ripple") and "Blab" back issues. He will also be displaying some great rare vintage Krampus cards, many that were used for the book. We will also have authentic vintage Krampus cards for sale as well as Neo Krampus postcards by "Shag" and several others. The "Shag" Krampus etching should be finished also. Get something cool and Lowbrow to stick in the stocking rather than wimpy junk. I am putting some of the images online tonight so check the site at www.copronason.com . See you there!!!

The C/N site is rarely updated, so calling them at 310-398-2643 or e-mailing them at
purchase@copronason.com would probably help us non-SoCal folks get a "Neo Krampus" etching or card.

Even more Shag/Disneyland art (and then the inevitable merchandise)...

Mouse Planet posted this on their Dec 7-12 Disneyland Park Update

The Disney Gallery has some big plans for 2005. All of these details and dates are subject to change, but here is a preliminary exhibit schedule MousePlanet was able to obtain:
- The Gallery closes on January 2 to remove the Haunted Mansion exhibit. This coincides with the date the Haunted Mansion Holiday closes.
- The Gallery closes for the entire month of January, and reopens in early February with the first of a three-part exhibit series honoring Disneyland's 50th Anniversary.
- The first exhibit features Fantasyland and the Disney princesses.
- The second exhibit, scheduled to premiere in May, focuses on the remaining three original lands of Disneyland. This exhibit features a lot of Shag's retro artwork
- A third exhibit featuring artwork by Thomas Kinkade debuts at the end of summer 2005.
Most of the exhibit artwork, including concept art from four original lands, become available on the Print on Demand system.

Maybe ShagCorp wasn't as annoyed at the treatment Disney gave them much as Shag was rumored to be.

The possibility that the "Print on Demand" system will be cranking out open-ended Shag prints is a departure from the norm too.

Discussion and even more info at this forum at Tiki Central. By the way, there are still available sopies of "The Tiki Quartet" serigraph set available at TC.

Finally, Google News Alerts pointed out that The Omaha World Herald referenced Shag on Dec 9th -

O'Halloran, owner of Murphy's Lounge near 96th and L Streets, will turn Jesters Comedy Club at 114th Street and West Dodge Road into a nightclub called "SHAG, a vodka bar."
...

O'Halloran's new club will be divided into two areas. The front room will feature a lounge with '60s-style furnishings. Six monitors will display artwork of Southern California illustrator-painter Josh Agle, who works under the moniker Shag.

Approved/not approved by ShagCorp?

We'll be going to the DC Gallery today to get a name for the Shag painting included with "The Sophisticated Savage" Group Show.

...and it's called "Heimlich: A True Story." Asking price was $6,000 and it sold to someone outside the Denver area. Here's hoping we don't see iton eBay anytime soon.

Info from DC Gallery -

THE SOPHISTICATED SAVAGE

A Group Tiki Show

December 3rd 2004 - January 5th, 2005

“Exotic, alluring, evocative, and other-worldly. Images of gods, islands, weapons, regalia of tattooed chiefs – the vestiges of South Seas civilizations have fascinated the West since voyagers, adventurers and traders first ventured into the South Pacific."

"Earlier this century the tribal art of Oceania and Africa exerted an important influence on Modern Art. Picasso, Gauguin, Klee, Ernst, Madigliani, Brancusi, Giacometti, and Lipchitz were just some of the artists who incorporated an influence of Primitivism into their art.” – from Taboo: The Art of Tiki

Post-war America saw Tiki culture at its peak, and it has since been enjoying a revival in today’s popular culture. From the Exotica music of Martin Denny, to the tiki theme bars and restaurants that can be found all across our nation, and of course, to the artwork that is being created by so many well-known Modern Pop and Lowbrow artists today.

This is precisely what we wish to invite Denver art lovers to experience this coming December, with our first annual Tiki Group Show, “The Sophisticated Savage.” Many of today’s most popular Lowbrow and Modern Pop artists will be sharing with us their own take on this phenomenon known as Polynesian Pop, including SHAG, Tim Biskup, The Pizz, Kirsten Easthope, Lisa Petrucci, Mitch O’Connell (site having issues), Shaunna Peterson, Stone Larkin, Alex Meyer (can't find sites for either, but they mentioned in this write-up), Miles Thompson, and Heather Watts. This is promising to be one of our most exciting shows of the year, so don’t miss it!

Opening Reception TOMORROW!
(well, tonight since i was asleep when this e-mail came in)
Friday, December 3rd, 7-10pm

Here's a pic of Shag's contribution - don't know the title yet.

The Baroness and i can't find adequate child care for the 'Little Baron,' so we'll be dropping by the gallery sometime after the opening reception.

Had a post that was truly cooking with gas last week while using the free Internet at Panera Bread, but my laptop pooped out at an inopportune moment. Now that we have hi-speed access at home (still no furniture), here's hoping that I get updates going more often.

It's the holiday season, yet again, eBay should be getting a whole hell of a lot more exciting - a higher than usual amount of serigraphs up for auction going for a higher amount of money.

Hey, it's the first day of Advent and I can see that only eBay and Stuff-o-Rama are selling Shag's Advent calendars.

While out exchanging a bummed out router to Best Buy, I saw that Shag did the album art for this years "Maybe This Christmas..." CD compilation from Nettwork Records. Looks like it has The Polyphonic spree covering John Lennon's "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" and some band called Pilate ("Toronto based rock/pop band described as Radiohead meets Crowded House") covering The Pogues wonderful "Fairytale in New York" (must not forget the amazing Kirsty MacColl).

DC Gallery's group show, "The Sophisticated Savage" opens this Friday in Denver - it runs until the 30th. Thought we'd be there at the opening, but suitable supervision for The Boy has yet to be found...

M Modern Gallery's "My Way" group show ends this Sunday.

Copro/Nason's group show "Krampus & Christmas" opens on the 11th - will I try to get that limited edition Shag etching or not? Rather, will I be allowed to try to get that limited edition Shag etching or not?

Next solo show is at M Modern from January 29th to March 6th "A Gracious Oasis - Palm Springs Paintings."

Also, the Palm Springs Modernism show for 2005 is from February 18 to 20. Seeing that "Desert Polynesia" was released there in 2003 and "Palm Springs Serenade" in 2004 (both to benefit the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation)... Will Shag be releasing a serigraph at that event in 2005?

-----

Even more Enchanted Tiki Room related merch for sale at Disneyland. Here's two topics from Tiki Central about them - #1 & #2.

Disney DelivEARS - (800) 362-4533 (Outside the US - (714) 781-7557)

Shag's deal with Disney for Tiki Room items ends in 2005. Hey, I also think that his deal with MGM for the Pink Panther re-design ends then, too.

Thanks to Google News, I found this story from "Out in America" -

One of Southern California's most famous living artists, Shag, has created a holiday card exclusively for Pets Are Wonderful Support/Los Angeles. Proceeds from the card sales will help PAWS/LA and its mission to keep people and their companion animals together.

Updates to my post on October 13th about "Shag With A Twist" -

1) There's a web-site up for the show here.

2) Cindy Bradley was kind enough to send a clarification about the article a few days back -

The Daily Breeze article was mistaken about Shag being hired as a set designer. In fact he is collaborating on sets, costumes, and has created the characters.

3) She also sent me the following press release -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELESASE
SHAG WITH A TWIST
A Cocktail of Music and Dance

Shag With A Twist
Previews March 3rd
LA Theatre Centre

Join the Jetsetter Club and experience a new show, "Shag With a Twist," a decadent Romp brought to you by Jetsetter Productions.

It all began at a Hollywood Memorabilia Show several years ago when choreographer/director, Cindy Bradley, picked up a cocktail napkin decorated with Shag art. "I was immediately struck with the thought that I had to work with this wonderful artist, Shag. Little did I know, he was a pop culture icon of such phenomenal proportion."

Determined to follow her instincts, Bradley made her way to Shag's opening at the M Modern Gallery in Palm Springs. There, she met the artist and proposed a collaboration to bring Shag's art to life in a stage production as unique as his work. "When I was approached by Cindy Bradley, I was impressed by her vision of how to make the paintings move while remaining grounded in the universe of Shag," said Agle.

"I thought it'd be fun to take art which exists in a very specific form and adapt it to something much larger; something that can appeal to people on many more levels than just the visual. The opportunity to collaborate with creative people who aren't just fellow painters has also been really rewarding."

Since then, they've worked together to create a distinctive theatrical experience "Shag with a Twist". A true cocktail of music and dance!

Composer, Chris Lang, adds to the mix bringing in an original score that includes the sounds of Italian Go-Go, Bossa Nova, and Exotica. His music accompanies "The Twinkie Buns," a live singing group that appears throughout the wacky Shag with a Twist world.

The story is about murder and deceit, but as sure as Slinky gets screwed, you are in for fun and laughter through entertainment that will transport you into an era of martinis and glamour.

You can join the Jetsetter Club and receive tickets to the previews of Shag With a Twist as well as special gift items by logging onto
www.shagwithatwist.com Membership is limited, but don't be discouraged, tickets for the show will be on sale soon.

I just noticed that parts/most of this are on the site under "Behind the Scenes." No idea how to join the Jetsetter Club yet... (Ahhh sweet smell of suspense!)

-----

Legit (#1 & #2) or not? Six Space Gallery has been promising a Shag button set for a while now, but I don't think that eBay seller "backdoorbuttons" is doling out those sets.
